7 Steps to Designing a High-Engagement Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom model is one of the fastest growing trends in education right now and it’s no wonder that more and more schools are embracing the methods to improve learning outcomes, engage students, and make learning more fun.

One of the biggest challenges instructors face when transitioning from a traditional lecture course to a flipped classroom model is making sure that students are adequately prepared for each in-class session.

OWLv2, the chemistry online learning system from Cengage, is designed to support learning through the four phases of the flipped classroom model, but especially during the outside-class preparation phases.

Here’s how you can use OWLv2 to prepare your students for a high level of engagement in your flipped classroom:

Knowledge Acquisition

1.)   Create Reading Assignments using the MindTap Reader ebook for specific textbook sections.

2.)   Use the External Assignments tool to put links to online lectures, interesting articles or other resources into your assignment list.

Readiness Assurance

3.)   Assign Mastery Problem sets to students. These assignments give students a set of three questions and students must answer 2 out of 3 to earn full credit. Each question is asked in a slightly different way and chemicals and numbers vary with each attempt. Students can see full worked-out examples and links to topic review are provided if they need extra help. Students learn the material at their own pace in a supported environment with lots of feedback and help so they don’t get stuck. All questions are fully and automatically graded so you can hold students accountable for their own learning.

Knowledge Application

4.)   Use OWLv2 multimedia material as a part of in-class activities to explore conceptual learning. Simulation-type modules are especially effective using virtual environments to explore different conditions and observe and analyze scientific principles.

5.)   Use OWLv2 the authoring tool to design and write your own challenge questions that groups must complete together then enter answers into their own accounts.

Assessment and Review

6.)   Create review assignments using sets of End of Chapter questions for students to complete within one week of topic coverage to solidify their learning.

7.)   Assign the Adaptive Study Plans (ASPs) to review entire chapters. These assignments provide learning paths and remedial help to close any knowledge gaps before exam time.
